I caught someone who thought they could copy from an internet essay site without references. They are now officially BONED. Rock and roll.
Also, I went with James to a talk by Clive James about post-war Australian art. Clive was a nice old chap but committed a mortal sin by bagging Lacan and Foucault as art critics. Well… I guess Lacan is kinda lame but that’s no reason to say he’s ‘poison’ to the art world.
Oh wicked! Battleplan is starting and this week’s manouvre is ‘insertion’. Gotta go.

The new (well, new in the last year and a half) plagiarism rules at UWA scare the bejesus out of me. I am petrified that I am unintentionally plagiarising everything, and the academic SWOT team (get it?) will track me down and revoke my borrowing privileges - or even worse, my Guild catering discounts.
How did you find them out? Was it a wikipedia article? I love that first years reference wikipedia articles.

It was an actual essay site, and I noticed because they were making points that even I hadn’t considered. Too much perspective, really. Plus they weren’t setting the points up or following through with explanation (ie making a big deal of it) like you’re supposed to do when you say something smart. Very suspicious behaviour. Though I’ll give it to them that they did a good job of chopping it up - I was just about to give up when I found the site.

I was always too lazy to plagiarise. Well, much anyway. Such trouble is simply too much effort.
How do you know when you’ve said something smart in an essay, Mark? I always assumed that someone, somewhere had already thought of it - even if it seemed a bit clever to me. History’s a real bitch like that though, ’cause they usually have.

Um…. what?

Hehe. I was flipping through some first year med student exams today (not marking, just searching for a lost paper) and it was disturbing to feel such power. Now that i have seen these precious bits of paper strewn all over the floor does it make me glad that i never knew that PhD students got to mark MY exam papers.
UWA may preach about plagarism but i really don’t think they are harsh as they say. Academics that mark the essays really have better things to be doing than googling to catch out a student.

Nails - that’s just crap pushed by people who care too much about what others have said. There are plenty of good ideas that haven’t been written down yet, and plenty of valid points of view that haven’t been heard. All you have to do, really, is think for yourself.
Marcheline - right back at ya.
Lee - true about students marking, and teaching as well. It’s not like there’s a course you have to do. They just give you a pile of essays and tell you what the average grade should be. Scary. But the feeling of power? I can enjoy with that.

I found the thinking for myself easy enough - of course, I did have a bit of an issue with turning up to lectures which probably helped with that ;)

Nice work on the snare. Rock on.

Nails - yes, not showing up to class does tend to give people some funny ideas about the course material.
Switch - thought for a moment you were complimenting my drumming (you’d probably be the first) but now I get it. Yes, snared indeed. :)
