Mix Tape! Instructions only.

Triple J are having a contest for the best mix tape with a sex theme, and the following is what I sent in. I was going for a sort of dynamic mood vibe. Slow at first, then boppy and sweet, then loud and crazy, and finally chilled.

1 - Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps (of course, it was a no-brainer to pick this one)
2 - Massive Attack - Teardrop (this was pretty obvious also)
3 - Led Zeppelin - Kashmir
4 - Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood - Some Velvet Morning (maybe I should have said ‘Summer Wine’?)
5 - The Breeders - Off You
6 - Chicks on Speed - Euro Trash girl
7 - The Blow - Parentheses (hell yeah - this track is well worth a listen)
8 - Yo La Tengo - By the time it gets dark
9 - Deborah Conway - Dust to Dust
10 - Mohammed Rafi - Teri Bindiya Re (fairly good song, but an absolutely stunning lead-in for…)
11 -Dirty Three - Indian Love Song (I wouldn’t actually want to get busy to this song though - it’s too loud and cathartic, and I don’t think I could live up to it performance-wise)
12 - Dirty Three - Better Go Home Now
13 - Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground
14 - Velvet Underground - I’m Sticking With You (left-field, but it would be funny)
15 - Joanna Newsom - Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie

OK, so I’m not too sure about Chicks on Speed, but the others are cool. The competition will be running for a while if you want to make your own.

  1. I find the instructions to this project quite ambiguous.

We want you to program the sexiest mixtape ever. An hour of your favourite songs that deal with SEX. The songs that get you in the mood for love…

“Songs about sex” and songs which are sexy and/or put one in the mood are not the same thing. Which is it!!

  2. Judging by the radio promo, it was ‘in the mood’ songs, not songs about sex. But I think it’s wide open.

  3. Interesting mix. I’m still pondering my own mix.

There’s a small part if me that wants to send in some prank ones full of Nine Inch Nails, Marvyn Gaye, Britney Spears and Celine Dion. Yeah. Get down and dirty to some Celine, baby.

  4. Only 15 tracks? I’m thinking of a box-set myself :)

  5. Hmmm…sexytime mix tapes huh? I’ll have to think about it.

Nice picks btw. I love the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They would definitely have a spot on my mix.

  6. Kitta - I would make sure it had ‘Smurfin’ Safari.’ Oh yeah.

James - If it’s the ABBA box set you’re thinking of, you might not get any at all.

Julia - I like that one song heaps more than anything else they’ve done (so do a lot of people…), but they’re still pretty good I think.

  7. Parentheses? Really?? You could bone to that?

    Comment by Tomás Ford — Friday February 9 2007 @ 3:51 pm

  8. Tomas: ‘Parentheses’ is totally hot. I would bone to it. Again and again.

Mark: Yeah Yeah Yeahs are inherently hot. You put anything by then on, you are guaranteed a Good Time.

  9. ‘Maps’ is nice but could get a little redundant though i find. ‘Porcelain’ is just short & sweet and ‘Date with the Night’, well it’s all crazy hot. I prefer the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s second album though, not too sure in a shaggable way…

‘Teardrop’ is classic - in fact, that entire album is a garanteed Rolling ‘Round the Sack time. Goldfrapp too, might i add. Oh, and Interpol’s Length of Love always gets me quite hot & bothered. For a self-explanatory reason. Ahem.

  10. After much pondering I put together this mix, tell me what you think:

    Portishead-Sour Times
Queens of the Stone Age-You Got a Killer Scene There Man
    Poe-Fingertips
    Garbage-Milk
    Raconteurs-Blue Veins
    Denali-You File
    Yeah Yeah Yeahs-Phenomena
    Blur-Good Song
    Cowboy Junkies-Sweet Jane
    Tom Waits-Alice
    Zero 7-Somersault
Bob Dylan-You Belong To Me (I like this one better than the Patsy Cline version)

And if you want a couple songs to make you feel dirty after:

    Fiona Apple-Criminal
Poe-Angry Johnny (for I hate you and I may even cut your dick off after sex)

  11. Tomas - especially could. Stacks.

Lizzy - thx for standing up for me, dude. You know your stuff. When it comes to music, at least.

V - Goldfrapp. Now I should get me some of that and have a listen, shouldn’t I?

Julia - Fiona Apple - ‘Never is a Promise’ is far and away the best song on that album, imho. But even that is still too depressed and miserable to bone to. Sorry. The rest are pretty cool tho.

  12. there’s a song called “doin it wild” or “doing it well” or something. rap song, someone like ll or whoever. lots of orgasm noises in it. hilarious.

soulzajah (sp? - locals) also did a song called “swallow” which is funny, sexy and appropriate. (actually it’s sexy more than funny, i just find it amusing because i have a weird sense of humour)

2 live crew - me so horny.

some of the stuff by 8ball (another ex local now in london)

also barry adamson - set the heart for the controls of the pelvis (main lyric = “save me from my own hands”)

i would also put something totally inappropriate in there - like britney’s hit me one more time. or something by the spice girls. just for a laugh.
