I gotta new apartment, baby nah nah-nah nah-nah nah

Hey guys, I’m writing to you from my new apartment in Cabramatta, Sydney. You may have heard Mish going on about how bad the crime rate is here, but she’s just jealous because it took her two months to find a place and I got one in two days.

PWNED.

That has to be some kind of record. Anyway, it’s a pretty good place. If you look at my flickr (link to the right), you’ll see it has the biggest bathroom in the history of anything. In fact the bathroom here is probably the size of my first flat in Enmore :P I’m realising right now that you can hear the trains pretty well from here, but it’s not too loud - and besides, being only 2 minutes walk from the station is kewlz.

Cabramatta, for those of you that don’t know it, is in the western suburbs of Sydney about 50 minutes train ride from the city. It it hella full of asians, and judging by my whole one day’s worth of experience I think they’re mostly Vietnamese and Chinese. I like this because I am on the short side and people here are more on my eye level. There is a supermarket, a bottle-o and a laundromat. As has been noted, the crime rate is highly controversial with estimates varying from “kinda dodgy, dude” to “I haven’t been mugged yet so it must be okay.” Oh and it’s Australia’s illegal-verge-rubbish-dumping capital, apparently.

Well, it’s time for bed now. I will drop you a comment soon, promise.

  1. Ooooh, sounds tres cosmopolitan! All those cultures! One place! It’s like you’re living your own version of Looking For Alibrandi… but all asian and stuff! Nice!

  2. Crime rate of Cabra is pretty damn well exaggerated from what it used to be back around the time of 5T and John Newman. Now, things are pretty good. And for the food, you’re wide open to great stuff.

  3. “It is hell full of asians”

I am glad I am not the only one who feels like a redneck whenever he sees a person with darker skin. Spending a lot of time in Perth with all those anglo-celtic people does something to you…

  4. You’ll find some excellent food in the area. When you find somewhere, don’t forget to invite me!

  6. Tomas - Yeah, because I care about being cosmopolitan…

Switch - Okay, I see about the crime rate. Don’t know about the food yet - some of the places look well dodgy - but I’ll have to give it a go and see.

Ross - Yeah, it’s weird man. It’s so different to Rockingham - in fact it’s different to anywhere in WA except those two streets in Northbridge. I can see why they put other language instructions on the back of government forms - there are probably stacks of households where people don’t normally speak English here, and in fact anywhere in Sydney.

James - Of course, not man :)

Nails - Actually it is HELLA full, but yeah, I was making a note of it for people who’ve never been here. I’m guessing you have?

  9. I can’t quite decide whether a bathroom party would be totally awesome or the epitome of awkwardness.

As to the other [bad Ross for not quoting properly and making my lazy-arsed cutting and pasting look bad], I don’t think I’ve ever stopped at Cabramatta but have picked up that very Sydney thing of identifying suburbs by their major ethnic or social groups.

  10. Perth just keeps coming back to get me. I went to an opening night show tonight and got talking to - for quite some time - a born and bred Perth guy who graduated from WAAPA few months ago and who has moved to Sydney. The cultural diversity of Sydney has been a big surprise for him too. Nice guy. I think I recognise him from his days as a barman in Perth.

  11. I wonder if people steal cacti in your new town?

    Your new place looks nice!

  12. Congrats on finding a new place so quickly. It seems pretty decent from the pictures. That is a ginormous bathroom! :)

  13. Nails - Awkwardness? I don’t care what you say, I’m putting in a disco ball.

James - You remember your barman? You must spend a lot of time getting sloshed. PS: Sorry I couldn’t make it out tonight. Blergh.

Julia - I think I’m safe with all sorts of plants. I’m even thinking of getting a new one for the balcony.

Winter - Yeah, I could have enjoyed a bit more bedroom actually, but a huge bathroom is better than a sock in the face, innit?
