Boredom. And ROCK.

1/2 way through a chapter edit
Up to Diesel Sweeties #1312 (So many puns!)
Learning to tune bike derailleurs
Otherwise bored
Thanks to everyone for your rockin’ out suggestions, I’ll try to give each one a listen.

Here are some things that rock that I discovered for myself:

1) The Blow - The best thing since sliced beer. Fun, intimate and unbelievably cool. Try ‘Come On Petunia’ or ‘Parentheses.’

2) Joanna Newsom - One of the sweetest and most idiosyncratic songwriters I can think of. She may irritate the crap out of some people, but that’s just an extra level of awesome. Try ‘Bridges and Balloons’ or ‘Emily.’

3) Be Your Own Pet - Loud, Fast, Silly. Like Nirvana on Red Cordial. Try ‘Bicycle, Bicycle, You Are My Bicycle’ or ‘Adventure.’

Notice a trend here? It’s all girls and it’s all cute. How about we finish on:

4) Iggy and the Stooges - If you haven’t rocked out to ‘Search and Destroy,’ you have wasted your life. It’s also interesting to ponder the links between Iggy Pop’s non-macho masculinity and Kurt Cobain’s attitude. He is like the anti-Jim Morrison.

PS: screw Of Montreal, they are way pretentious.

  2. According to iTunes the artists I have played the most in the last twenty-four hours are:

    1) The Beatles
    2) Neil Finn
    3) Ben Folds
    4) Jeff Buckley
    5) Arctic Monkeys

Yes, it’s a bitch being male, middle-class and white. Sham on.

  3. Lately:

    The Animals
    The White Stripes
    Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
    Jarvis/Pulp
    Simon & Garfunkel (just don’t)

    Er, why are we listing?

  4. Of Montreal are only pretentious if you don’t dance to the record or imagine yourself doing so. Besides, how can you say that on a post where you list Joanna Newsom as a favourite?

  5. I’m definately going to check out all the stuff that the cool kids have suggested for you, since most of it I’m not familiar with. Guess I need to diversify my music library. Sorry I don’t have any suggestions for you…I’ve just been listening to Finger Eleven’s self titled and Straight to the Withdrawal (my friend’s band) for the last day and a half.

    I’m up to Diesel Sweeties #1313 :)

“Ohio - It really seemed like a good idea on paper” You know, I’m not even sure if that’s making fun of something in particular, but it’s a pretty good assesment of things around here.

  6. James - Madonna is almost cool :)

Ross - Damn straight. You should check out Darren Hanlon or The Lucksmiths or something - right up your alley.

Nails - Beats me! But Simon & Garfunkel are cool. That song about New York is neat.

Tom - Listening to Joanna Newsom is pretentious, but she herself isn’t. That’s what I mean. Of Montreal may be the next big thing, but to me they sound arrogant and underdeveloped. Just like we used to ;)

Becky - I was wondering about that. Maybe Clango was out of ideas?

  7. listening to joanna newsom is pretentious?

either i don’t understand the definition of the word, or it gets bandied around too much.

surely nobody would listen to a scratchy little girl’s voice unless we actually enjoyed it?

i have to admit though, when i found out she is annoyed about people saying she has a childlike voice, i thought it was a bit silly. newsflash little j - you DO sound like a child - it’s what we like about you!

meanwhile did i already suggest cocorosie? they sound similar to her but are perhaps a little more grown up, or something.

  8. By pretentious I thought we meant that it was weird and artsy-fartsy. I mean, that last album had some ten-minute songs on it. Oh they were awesome to hear live though, and she herself is the nicest person…

    Hmm, Cocorosie hey?

  11. Oh right. I do that with talking.

  12. Yay! mario is back! =)

Will be giving your suggestions a listen today after I get off work!

Have you ever seen that carnival cruise ship ad that uses “lust for life” as the music? Kids are running around playing in wave pools with their smiling families. Kind of a weird juxtaposition, considering the lyrics.

  13. Mario is Back! Woot. :)

  14. I have now read the last 29 posts that I previously not read because I had been absent from the internets due to real life commitments. Anyway:

    1. Love the Carboardosaurs. Wish I had some for my place. I have little origami dinosaurs made out of used post-it notes at work, but I get so many perplexed looks and confuddled comments that I am contemplating moving them to somewhere less visible.

    2. I am in constant fear of losing my wallet and not having any money. Now I realise that I stash money around the place for just this reason. I thought I was doing it as some sort of weird attempt to save the cash from being spent, but now I realise it’s a end-of-the-world-the-atms-don’t-work thing.

    3. I miss reading your posts. Also, reading all of them at once has made me a little concerned about you. I hope that you’re doing ok in Syd-a-nee, and that it’s not as boring as reading 29 posts in a row would suggest.

  15. Julia - Australia isn’t really a carnival cruise ship nation. Especially after the whole P&O gang rape scandal (liquor and drugs were precisely the problem)

    Becky - ta!

Liz - I’m totally humbled you would read all the old posts. Humbled and perplexed. And it is absolutely that boring :) My next post will be directly addressed to boredom I think.

  16. All my posts directly address boredom [and Jarvis Cocker obsession] these days. I think it’s something in the water.

Oh no wait, I’m confused, my entire blog has always been about boredom.
